Our Working Farms Fund in Action

When we say our Working Farms Fund has been taking action for America’s local food system, we mean it! Over the past few months, we’ve acquired farmland for our first two groups of farmers in Georgia, including Love is Love Farm and Global Growers Network! Both groups are now expanding their sustainable farming operations and improving their local food systems. Learn more about our Working Farms Fund program and how you can help.

Creating Safe Passage for Wildlife in the Smokies

If you’ve ever been to the Great Smoky Mountains, you’ve probably driven on Interstate 40, which follows the Pigeon River Gorge in North Carolina and Tennessee. While this scenic route provides spectacular views of the natural landscape, it also intersects an important wildlife corridor. The bustling interstate has seen a 43% increase in traffic since 2005, which has led to bear, elk and other animals being hit and killed by vehicles. The Smokies Safe Passage initiative is building a new solution to help save wildlife that needs to take the dangerous journey across I-40.

North Carolina Wildlife Federation’s Dr. Liz Rutledge shares her insights on this important project.

In Case You Missed It: Reflecting on the History of Japanese Confinement

Last month was Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, and in case you missed it, we had the honor of hearing from Minidoka National Historic Site’s Kurt Ikeda. Not only is Kurt the chief of interpretation and education at Minidoka, which once held as many as 13,000 people in confinement in an Idaho desert, he has a personal family history of Japanese incarceration. He shares his powerful perspective in this must-read blog post.
