Our Working Farms Fund in Action
When we say our Working Farms Fund has been taking action for America’s local food system, we mean it! Over the past few months, we’ve acquired farmland for our first two groups of farmers in Georgia, including Love is Love Farm and Global Growers Network! Both groups are now expanding their sustainable farming operations and improving their local food systems. Learn more about our Working Farms Fund program and how you can help.
Creating Safe Passage for Wildlife in the Smokies
If you’ve ever been to the Great Smoky Mountains, you’ve probably driven on Interstate 40, which follows the Pigeon River Gorge in North Carolina and Tennessee. While this scenic route provides spectacular views of the natural landscape, it also intersects an important wildlife corridor. The bustling interstate has seen a 43% increase in traffic since 2005, which has led to bear, elk and other animals being hit and killed by vehicles. The Smokies Safe Passage initiative is building a new solution to help save wildlife that needs to take the dangerous journey across I-40.
North Carolina Wildlife Federation’s Dr. Liz Rutledge shares her insights on this important project.
